The fuel your body uses is found in the foods you eat.

Body fuel is often measured in calories. Certain foods contain more calories than others. A medium-sized apple contains 60 calories. A doughnut can contain as many as 400 calories. So, is a doughnut better for you than an apple? The answer is no.

You see, that doughnut, with its 400 calories, doesn’t provide any nutrients. Nutrients are the valuable ingredients that keep our bodies healthy and fit. Nutrients include:

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fats and oils (in small amounts)

On the other hand, that apple, which only has 60 calories, also provides your body with plenty of vitamins and minerals.

Better foods deliver better nutrition. Before you eat any food, stop to think if it provides good nutrition along with calories. Calories aren’t bad for you – in fact, we all need them. However, make sure you get some nutrients along with those calories.

Many foods are loaded with ‘empty calories’ – calories that don’t provide any nutrients. Foods that contain empty calories include:

  • Soda
  • Fried chips and other snacks
  • Cookies
  • Cakes and pastries
  • Candy and other sweets
  • Fast foods like burgers and fries

On the other hand, there are lots of tasty foods that are high in calories, but also deliver the nutritional punch you need to get fit and stay fit. High calorie foods that are good for you include:

  • Olive oil
  • Dried fruits
  • Dry-roasted nuts
  • GORP (Good Old Raisins and Peanuts)
  • Eggs
  • Fruit juices
  • Lean meats and fish

You don’t have to worry about counting calories as long as you get enough exercise and choose foods that also provide your body with the nutrients you need for good health.

Stay away from foods that are loaded with empty calories. They may be tasty, but they won’t help you stay healthy.
